Supporting Clients Experiencing Racial and Cultural Stress
In this episode of the Psyched to Practice podcast, Dr. Ray Christner and Paul Wagner are joined by Dr. Ryan DeLapp to discuss his workbook, Empower Yourself Against Racial and Cultural Stress (DeLapp, 2025). The conversation offers a framework for conceptualizing and addressing the emotional, identity-based, and agency-related impacts of racial and cultural stress on people of color (POC). Dr. DeLapp guides clinicians in identifying the nuanced ways these stressors manifest in clients’ lives and presents adaptable, culturally responsive strategies for integrating this understanding into individualized treatment planning. The discussion provides actionable tools for clinicians to approach conversations about race and culture with sensitivity and purpose. It also supports the development of flexible, targeted interventions that promote healing, empowerment, and resilience in the face of racial and cultural adversity.
