Selective Mutism
Elisa Shipon-Blum joins Dr. Ray Christner and Paul Wagner to provide a comprehensive look at selective mutism, reframed as a social communication anxiety disorder. Dr. Shipon-Blum shares her expertise and introduces the Social Communication Anxiety Treatment (SCAT) model, which emphasizes assessing individual baselines, understanding contributing factors such as sensory sensitivities and social anxiety, and implementing targeted, collaborative interventions. The episode stresses the importance of meeting children where they are and fostering gradual communication progress through support from caregivers and educators. Mental health professionals will gain valuable insights into the multidimensional nature of selective mutism and learn practical, evidence-based strategies to improve assessment, conceptualization, and treatment planning.
