Racism Related Stress
Dr. Ryan DeLapp discusses racism-related stress and the Reach Up Model, a structured framework designed to support individuals experiencing cultural stress and discrimination. Dr. DeLapp emphasizes the need for clinicians to develop an "orientation to life" that fosters cultural awareness and responsiveness beyond the therapy room. The discussion highlights proactive strategies for addressing racism-related stress in therapy, including conceptualizing cultural stress beyond diagnostic labels, integrating values-based interventions, and utilizing evidence-based practices from ACT, CBT, and DBT. The Reach Up Model prioritizes empowerment by helping clients identify strengths, recognize systemic and interpersonal barriers, and apply coping strategies that align with their cultural and personal identities. This training provides mental health professionals with concrete tools to enhance their practice, refine case conceptualization, and develop culturally responsive interventions for individuals affected by racism-related stress.
