From Codes to Character: Integrating Values within Ethical Decision-Making

This presentation explores foundational ethical principles—autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, and justice—and their practical application in professional settings. It examines the distinction between ethics (explicit, group-derived norms) and morality (implicit, personal values shaped by emotion and individual belief), addressing how personal values interact with professional obligations.
The Ethical Acculturation Model is introduced to illustrate how psychologists reconcile personal and professional value systems. A key takeaway is that ethical decision-making often involves constructing balanced solutions that uphold core ethical principles while navigating personal values within professional frameworks.
The discussion further examines how individual differences, cultural contexts, social systems, and cognitive biases shape ethical decision-making and moral reasoning, underscoring the importance of reflective, context-sensitive judgment in ethical practice. Building on this conceptual foundation, practical examples of ethical decision-making will be presented to illustrate these principles in action.

Course Objectives:

1. List three foundational ethical principles.
2. Explain the difference between ethics and morality.
3. Outline the four components of the Ethical Acculturation Mode.
4. Apply personal moral values in context of professional ethics for two vignettes.
