Educational Accommodations: A Primer for Clinical Practitioners
This training, led by Dr. Ben Lovett, provides a comprehensive examination of the theory, research, and practice of educational accommodations for students with disabilities. Drawing on empirical findings and legal standards, the program equips clinical practitioners to make evidence-based decisions regarding testing and instructional accommodations. Topics include the prevalence and misuse of accommodations, the double-edged nature of accommodations in promoting or undermining equity, and the key differences between accommodations and interventions. Participants will explore the requirements of Section 504, ADA, and IDEA, as well as the roles of external evaluators and school-based professionals in the accommodations process. Through review of research on differential boost, score comparability, and task validity, clinicians will learn a five-step framework for evaluating requests and monitoring effectiveness. This session strengthens practitioners’ ability to navigate complex clinical, ethical, and legal issues while ensuring fair access and valid assessment outcomes for students.
