Diagnostic Assessment of Adult ADHD

This course provides mental health professionals with a structured, evidence-informed model for accurately assessing ADHD in adults—integrating DSM-5-TR criteria, differential diagnosis, comorbidity patterns, and practical use of clinical interviews and assessment tools to enhance diagnostic precision and ethical communication with clients.

Course Objectives:

1. Summarize the components required for a diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood as defined by DSM-5-TR, including critiques of some existing criteria.
2. Summarize a wider view of symptoms of ADHD beyond those outlined in DSM-5-TR criteria to adequately assess for the presence of the ADHD symptoms drawing from contemporary models of ADHD.
3. Cite at least one screening measure that can be used in clinical practice to determine if a more thorough ADHD evaluation is indicated.
4. Name the preferred, recommended clinical method for verifying symptoms of ADHD as part of a diagnostic evaluation for adult ADHD.
5. Name at least one self-report adult ADHD symptoms questionnaire that can be used as part of an overarching ADHD evaluation.

J. Russell Ramsay, PhD., ABPP

Dr. J. Russell (“Russ”) Ramsay, PhD, ABPP, was co-founder and co-director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program and a professor of clinical psychology in the Department of Psychiatry in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, before retiring at the end of June 2023. He now has a solo, virtual psychology practice focusing on Adult ADHD. Dr. Ramsay is board-certified in Behavioral & Cognitive Psychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and is a diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT).
Dr. Ramsay has authored numerous peer-reviewed professional and scientific articles, research abstracts, and book chapters. He is the author of six books related to various aspects of adult ADHD (this count includes both the first and second editions of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult ADHD, not to “pad the stats” but because the second edition was a significant update and revision), including his recent, The Adult ADHD & Anxiety Workbook released on May 1, 2024. His self-help guidebook, The Adult ADHD Tool Kit, has been translated into Spanish, French, and Korean and is in the process of being translated into German. The Tool Kit is a recommended self-help book by the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT). He was an invited contributor to the APA Psychotherapy Video training series with an illustration of his CBT approach for adult ADHD.
Dr. Ramsay is an inductee into the CHADD Hall of Fame and received the Martin P. Szuba Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching & Research from the University of Pennsylvania. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Attention Disorders and is frequently sought out as an ad hoc reviewer for other journals. Dr. Ramsay has served previous terms on the Professional Advisory Boards of the major ADHD organizations in the U.S. He has lectured worldwide and been sought out by media outlets for his insights on topics related to ADHD in adults. Dr. Ramsay’s professional interests are improving the accurate assessment and effective psychosocial treatment of adult ADHD and training future behavioral health clinicians in these skills. He continues these missions while maintaining a full-time solo practice.
