Conducting Collaborative Assessments within a Science of Reading Framework

The evidence base supporting effective reading instruction has been established for decades. Yet, the recent popularization of the term “Science of Reading” has sometimes led to confusion regarding its meaning and application. While strong core instruction grounded in these principles is essential, it is only one component of a comprehensive literacy system. Effective literacy practice requires the integration of curriculum, assessment, intervention, and individualized supports.

This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the essential components of reading, with a focus on language development and the unique considerations for English language learners. The session will highlight strategies for implementing a data-driven Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) that promotes consistent data collection, communication across service providers, and timely intervention. Procedures for conducting collaborative cross-battery assessments—particularly between speech-language pathologists and school psychologists—will be presented, with an emphasis on how such collaboration enhances data collection, interpretation, and intervention planning. Participants will also develop a clear understanding of how to differentiate between dyslexia and developmental language disorder (DLD) and how to apply this knowledge in practice. Finally, specific literacy interventions and resources will be reviewed, with focused discussion on tailoring instruction to meet the needs of English learners within an equitable and evidence-based framework.

Course Objectives:

1. Use a practice-ready Patterns of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) model to organize and interpret data from all school-based service providers.
2. Understand how monolingual professionals can effectively evaluate an English Language Learner to determine dyslexia.
3. Describe a well-rounded understanding of systemic issues that impact the implementation of MTSS policies and procedures.
