Igniting Change: Implementing Science of Reading Aligned Assessment and Intervention

Beyond Eligibility: Using the Science of Reading to Drive Assessment and Intervention is a timely and practical session for school psychologists who want to strengthen how they assess and support students with reading difficulties. As national reading scores continue to decline—particularly among students from marginalized backgrounds—school psychologists are uniquely positioned to lead change. This presentation moves beyond eligibility decisions to focus on aligning reading evaluations and recommendations with the Science of Reading (SoR). The session will begin with a brief overview of current scientific research on how children learn to read, followed by an in-depth exploration of what that research means for school psychologists in practice. Participants will learn how to evaluate their current assessment tools and processes, identify where a student’s reading profile is breaking down, and incorporate well-aligned measures that address decoding, phonemic awareness, fluency, and comprehension. Emphasis will be placed on how to interpret results through the lens of the Simple View of Reading and how to ensure that assessment practices are not only thorough but also instructionally relevant. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their current assessment practices and identify gaps in their batteries, leaving with actionable tools and SoR-aligned resources they can begin using immediately.

Course Objectives:

1. Describe key principles of the Science of Reading and their relevance to school-based assessment and intervention.
2. Identify formal and informal tools for assessing decoding, phonological awareness, fluency, and comprehension.
3. Use reading profiles to guide eligibility decisions, recommend appropriate interventions, and support instruction across MTSS tiers.
