 Banish Bedtime Battles

In this episode of the Psyched to Practice Podcast, Dr. Ellen Flannery-Schroeder and Dr. Chelsea Tucker join Dr. Ray Christner and Paul Wagner to share evidence-informed strategies for helping parents manage common pediatric sleep challenges. Drawing from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), parenting research, and developmental psychology, the conversation explores the behavioral and emotional roots of bedtime resistance and sleep dependence in children. They outline a flexible six-week framework designed to promote sleep independence, reinforce coping skills, and reshape maladaptive routines. The episode emphasizes validating child anxiety, using gradual distancing techniques, and fostering self-soothing within the context of warm-firm parenting.

Course Objectives:

1. Explain the behavioral and emotional factors that contribute to bedtime resistance and sleep dependence in children.
2. Differentiate parenting styles based on levels of warmth and firmness and evaluate their effects on child sleep outcomes.
3.  Apply behavior-shaping techniques to foster sleep independence in a developmentally appropriate manner gradually.
4. Formulate CBT-informed bedtime routines that incorporate relaxation skills, self-soothing strategies, and anxiety management.
