Automate-Then-Audit: Building Sustainable Systems for ADHD Success

ADHD is marked by impaired executive functioning – difficulties with task initiation, sustaining focus, managing effort, regulating emotion, remembering, and self-monitoring. These deficits create cognitive overload in daily life. Establishing structured systems and habits can compensate: for example, predictable routines and external cues “reduce cognitive load and improve efficiency”. In practice, clinicians guide clients to automate tasks (using schedules, reminders, checklists, etc.) and then audit (regularly review) their systems. This reduces decision fatigue and supports sustainable behavior change. For instance, a fixed morning routine minimizes choices and offloads planning (“brush teeth, take meds, eat breakfast” every day). Research shows that consistent routines help ADHD patients stay organized and on track. This presentation details how to apply the automate-then-audit approach, mapping common ADHD challenges to practical strategies, with evidence-based support.

Course Objectives:

1. Develop structured system that reduces cognitive overload and builds sustainable habits by automating daily tasks and auditing their effectiveness regularly.
2. Identify common executive functioning challenges (activation, focus, effort, emotion, memory, action) and map them to practical automation and audit strategies.

3. Create low-friction, repeatable routines with clients across key life domains using plug-and-play templates while regularly assess the effectiveness of automated systems and refine them.
